During one of Superior's infamous storms in 1967; Boatswain’s Mate First Class Edgar Culbertson, Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Richard R. Callahan, and Fireman Ronald C. Prei from the local Coast Guard base braved the storm and ventured out on the pier to rescue the two boys reportedly stranded at the pierhead light. The men tethered themselves together, with a spacing of twenty-five feet, and by the light of hand lanterns, proceeded to the end of the pier.
After finding no trace of the boys at the lighthouse, the coastguardsmen headed back. While making their way along the pier, a twenty-foot wave swept Culbertson off his feet and carried him over the breakwater wall and into the turbulent Lake Superior waters. Despite a valiant effort by his crewmates, Culbertson perished. Culbertson was posthumously awarded the Coast Guard Medal, and a plaque on the north pier commemorates his sacrifice.
Though he wasn't trying to rescue anyone. The Same thing happened on the same pier to my grandfather captain Sem in '43. Nobody ever saw him again.

Up until the sacrificial drownings and eye-widening images this was a very peaceful thread.

Quite relaxing to read.

Huh.

West Point Lighthouse, one of the 29 lighthouses on Prince Edward Island. Bit of a tourist attraction, it has a restaurant, craft shop, rooms to rent and a small museum. You can climb up the very steep stairs and go out on the top to get a great view. That is the Northumberland Strait to the left.

About six mile up the coast from me, St. Mary's Lighthouse, reached between the tides via a short causeway.

haha, you pegged me.

There's something about the solitude a lighthouse represents... yeah, I think they're cool. That would have been my ideal job--a remote lighthouse, a lot of books, and a PC that can run Fast Attack. And a lot of stores in the pantry. That would be heaven.

Grays Harbor Lighthouse, Point Chehalis Washington. Thanks to the accumulation of sediment on the harbor jetty system it's now 3,000 feet back from high tide from the original 400 when built in 1897.

POINT ARENA LIGHTHOUSE 130 miles N. of San Francisco and a tough one to get to on the coast HWY 1And one I steer by when sailing(motoring actually) back late to the Marina at Vallejo: ALCATRAZ ISLAND LIGHT right in the middle of the San Francisco Bay: just a perspective shot (not me) FORT POINT LIGHT at the entrance to San Francisco Bay is currently inactive but what a shot of the Golden Gate from inside old Fort Point!!

So, last night I was laying in bed with my girl, and there was a painting of a lighthouse on a wall, and I asked her why she thought people liked lighthouse pictures and paintings.

Basically, her response was that they offer a beacon of safety and surety in a chaotic world, that no matter how bad it gets, there is a ray of hop reaching out to us, leading us to safety. So the paintings offer a feeling of safety and tranquility we might not otherwise get.

When I enlisted I think there was just one lightship still on station. But plenty of former keepers still in the ranks with some good sea stories.
