The rotational period is about 240 million years at the position of the Sun The Milky Way as a whole is moving at a velocity of approximately 600 km per second with respect to extragalactic frames of reference. The Milky Way alone contains between 200 and 400 billion stars and at least 100 billion planets. Considering that you are spinning on the earths axis: 1000 mph and circling the sun: We are approximately 93 million miles (150 million km) from the Sun, and at that distance, it takes us one year (365 days) to go around once. The full path of the Earth's orbit is close to 600 million miles (970 million km). To go around this immense circle in one year takes a speed of 66,000 miles per hour (107,000 km/hr)3. At this speed, you could get from San Francisco to Washington DC in 3 minutes.
In addition to which...Space itself is pulling apart at the seams, expanding at a rate of 74.3 plus or minus 2.1 kilometers (46.2 plus or minus 1.3 miles) per second per megaparsec (a megaparsec is roughly 3 million light-years). If those numbers are a little too much to contemplate, rest assured that's really, really fast. And it's getting faster all the time. In short you, a genetically engineered snack for visiting grey's, are in a four-way travel /speed mode! You can communicate with me in a second !....and need not worry about warp drive-we're already warped enough! und haulin' BBY

Wow thanks Aktungbby!

And yes, i could and should have googled that myself .. however even theoretically "knowing" this does not quite lead to a real 'proportional' perception of cosmic speeds, and distances..

Regarding "the Bell", and Spock ..

b.t.w. does 'aktungbby" refer to the U2 record, back then

Doubt it seeing as if they indeed had such a reaction they'd have wiped us out already. After all you don't wait for the weed to grow into a tree before pulling it.

Once you accept that space is nothing expanding into something...

Then you can wear stripes with plaid without fear of repercussions.

My Sci-fi/science heart became so happy when I read about it.

Well as some one in the thread wrote-it could very well be wrong in the measuring.

Now I wait for the next article in this adventure, who will either confirm it or say it was a false alarm
