Thank you both.

Yes I was running on the surface. Hit him three times with the deck gun which started a small fire on his deck, but finished him off with a torpedo. Calculated and inputted his speed as 6 knots, but unsure if he was running so slow because of damage from the deck gun or if that was his regular cruising speed. Will submerge next time I spot something to test hydrophone underwater. The many joys of the S-18 class. Thanks very much again.

New contact made just 11 nm from my current position. Went to periscope depth, TC'ed for a few seconds, checked hydrophone and there he was bearing 24 degrees. The light lit up such a beautiful green. My hydrophone works!

Welcome aboard, Crumpler!

Aside from the peculiarities of the sh4 hydrophones, you shouldn't have to rely on them that much. Early war US sound gear wasn't that good; mean detection ranges were something like 7,000 yds., or so. You should usually see the targets, before you hear them.
