FFS. It's unimportant to you. The world isn't organised for your benefit. When gay rights are under threat and in some places marching backwards, it matters.

In a perfect world, I agree, it shouldn't matter. But as GT's resident Chicken Little you might agree that the world isn't bloody perfect.

Quote:
Why to be proud of being gay, escapes me. It's as if I were proud to have eyes that need glasses, or somebody else being proud to have blond hair. "Gay pride" is no doubt one of the most stupid and pointless slogans I have ever heard.
Oh for God's sake. Your eyesight or hair colour aren't major impediments to your pursuit of happiness or your rights as a human, they don't deny you the rights and benefits of the perfectly-sighted or black-haired, so either stop making the comparison or make it somewhere I don't have to stomach it. I could suggest somewhere.

Maybe he should have kept it quiet to ensure that any young or impressionable member of what is still a discriminated-against class could go without the benefit of knowing the head of the world's most valuable company is just like them, suffered the same they have, and succeeded in life.

Gay pride exists because gay shame exists.

The shame should not exist, of course. Stupid arguments like this one aren't exactly hurting, but they're definitely not helping.

Yeah, Apple need the advertising. Strewth.

And you, Mr. Cook - better be proud of for example your job achievements or business success, if you feel like it. Because different to your skin colour or sexual orientation, actively achieving something is something that you indeed sometimes can be proud of and claim credit for.
You think he's not proud of those things? Being gay affects your life and who you are as a person. THe environment of where you grow up affects this massively. You can end up normal, a little more guarded, or hung by your neck until dead.

Quote:
But no athlete ever has won a gold medal for having this or that shoe size or having green eyes - but for having trained hard and then winning the final competition. That's what the applause rewarded - his shoe size was not asked for, never.
This argument is beyond stupid. Congratulations on missing the point entirely.

Hmm!! ..you're making a big issue of it. Skybird just said that it's not a big issue to him.. maybe you missed that, being a bit over-sensitive!

As do most males on the planet. But, looking at the obvious, you can't be a lesbian unless you're female.
You're not considering reconstructive surgery so you can go full tilt are you?

I agree with vanjast: I think you're being a bit tough on Skybird, Tchocky... he was only trying to say it shouldn't be an issue, even though (sadly) it is with a lot of people. Your statement, re-quoted by Steve above, does sum things up perfectly

When I was younger I had a lot of gay friends, but we were in a music-orientated environment where it was not an issue: they were always able to be relaxed about it with no-one getting on their case, plus they knew any joking about it was not meant to be hurtful...

Watch out for Jeff: in "What Are You Doing Now" yesterday, he was asking nikimcbee if he could get him a dildode... only he spelled it differently...

Hey, Jeff, HEY JEFF! What is a light-emitting dildode anyway?

That's just wrong on so many levels!!

It's DIODE not dildode, and I don't want anything emitting!
A DIODE can act as a one way gate.
(And I await your responce about those with baited breath and a few beers in me! )

For balance, I think it's important to point out that regardless of the spin being put on the story, Cook's homosexuality was never secret and was widely known in Apple for many years, just not publicized. By publicizing it he's certainly making a political statement, but I don't think it's necessarily about Apple's image rather than throwing his weight behind gay rights concerns. There's plenty of places in the world where that support might mean something.

Something to note and think about: If it wasn't for a gay man, Alan Turing, we all might not be able to post our comments or even enjoy the lifestyles we do right now. And, if it wasn't for anti-gay phobia, Turing might have lived a longer life and we might have been further beneficiaries of his intelligence...
