I run SHIII on a piddly 1.2Ghz PIII for crying out loud. No issues, hell I can even host 8 player online games with no probs!

How - Because I dont use onboard bloody vid cards or sound cards and have 4GB of Ram!

IIRC the TU1200 Nvida Gateway xv930 has both, onboard Vid an sound. With only 512Mb of ram your just begging for trouble (I maybe wrong, but I think it does, unless I have my M/B numbers mixed up). What little ram you have is being chewed up for your Vid and your triple cycling your CPU to play the game. I'm not surprised your having drama's.

Solution, grab 1 more stick of ram a vid card and a sound card. Your PC will thank you.

(If I do have the M/B's mixed up, more ram is still a bloody good idea. If fact since your running XP, you really should have more than 512MB of ram anyway. They say a MINIMUM for XP is 512MB, if thats just for the OS what do you think an added drain like a high end game is gonna do to your PC! I always suggest for XP a MINIMUM of 1 GB of ram, its call a CYA Policy [Cover Ya Arse].)

Edit - Hehe, I corrected my lil typo, I said 4MB instead of 4GB - I'd luv ta see XP run on 4MB let alone SHIII :rotfl:

God BLESS the Aussies!!! Thanks Cdr Gibs

First thing... I'm not angry with anyone here because dealing with this kind of stuff is very challenging for some users.... BUT....

As much as I would like to personally fix up everyone so that they could run GW comfortably.... Recommended (should be mandatory)specs to run Silent Hunter III include 1024 mb of RAM!!! (1 gigabyte)

The best way to set up your RAM cards: (your computer guy can do this...)

1) Get TWO STICKS THE SAME SPEED AND SIZE!!! Two is faster than one... I dunno why... it just is.

2) Have your computer guy DUAL CHANNEL THEM in BIOS... this allows the reading or writing of data to be channelled into whatever direction is most in-demand by your PC at the moment.

3) You cannot dual-channel a single stick of RAM.

4) Turn off all un-used programs running in the background when you play... especially temperature sensors. I have a temp sensor that refreshes the temp reading every three seconds... and if I leave it running I experience a severe and rhythmic dip in FPS every time it takes a measurement... and that is just one program of several I turn off before each SH3/GW run session.

5) MORE RAM IS USUALLY A CHEAPER/MORE AFFORDABLE UPGRADE

6) Not enough RAM will cause "memory mini-dumps" basically this means your PC cannot keep up with the running computations to continue the SH3 process... and you get CTD'd!!!

7) I learned all the above the hard way... and fixed it... and I am far from being a rich man and can I claim to even live comfortably.
I can feel your pain... believe me. I remember that crappy feeling of being so close but so far away. (All I want to do is just sail and sink stuff!!! WHY is it so hard to just run SH3?)

8) GW is a graphically intensive mod... yes.... but not nearly in the way that you think. With 99% of the altered graphics inclusions in GW... the Tanker IV Seafloor mod is one of the ONLY mods that expanded the actual size of the TGA file!!! For the most part this means we have simply replaced existing graphics with items that are no more difficult for your PC to process than the original. In some cases we have IMPROVED FPS!!!

Our smoke mod improves FPS and so does our "Waves Attenuation" values in the Sim.cfg

In the first patch we will make a lesser version (same graphic size as stock) of the Tanker IV seafloor mod as default. This mod is available at Terrapin's site now and will be readily available when the site returns... which will be very soon.

Given the right setup... GW can actually improve the performance of SH3 on your machine.

From the school of hard knocks!!! We salute you!

I do proudly report that my GW is 95% working better with the stock sea floor modification. After I go immediate to the bridge view, the jerky movements of the objects including my bridge crew went away within 30 seconds. A tiny bit slower than SH2 with RUB but I'm not complaining. At. least, it works now.
