In certain areas of the ocean there should be ice. Having never seen ice in SH4 I am assuming there is no ice displayed in the game. Am I correct in this or are there ice sheets that boats can go under?
If there is no ice is it something that can be added if there is ice does anyone know the file to adjust its size or properties?

Go far enough north and you run into a solid wall of ice.

Yea, go to the edge of the map north or south and the game blocks you with walls of ice, no getting under..
Don't know about stock, but most mods like TMO, RSRD do have numerous icebergs, but chances are you would never see them. In a way they're like any other platform, in that you can set waypoints and speed on them. However, as I recall they don't appear on radar, nor are they called out visually, more likely you would just crash into one. However the game keeps them fairly north and I don't know that any enemy traffic is ever in the area.... Seems there were about 3 types or sizes of icebergs. I did once add some traffic more north into RSRD, mostly jap fishing boats, some patrols, etc.....Seems I put some whaling ships in. Think I connected some missions for S boats out of Dutch Harbor to go after the fishing fleet protected by escorts where you would run into icebergs...Fact is, just nothing historically that far north...
