When you get your problem sorted, you should investigate and upgrade to one of the supermods (GWX, NYGM) pretty quickly.

Vanilla, unfortunately, teaches you a lot of bad tactical habits: the torpedoes and deck gun shells are over-powered, the merchants are flimsier, the escorts are manned by pre-schoolers, the British have not discovered mines, etc, etc.

If you wait until you are *really* good at Vanilla, you may find yourself having to unlearn as much as you learn when you go to a supermod.
