Hit 'escape' and click 'exit patrol'.

Remember to select exam, not training, when starting the tutorial.

Job done.
Strange glitches do happen but when this happened to me, it was because I failed to click on 'Exam' before starting. It is also good practice to be on the surface when you 'Abandon the mission' . . .

I always leave the stationary tramp steamer till last and the hit it with three torpedoes while I am on the surface at a range of under 500Metres - that way it goes down before it has a chance to get underway.

Agree about the decoy - always last as it's not going anywhere until you attack it.

For this tutorial I surface and go to flank after the third hit as the merchies (apart from the decoy tramper) are heading off in different directions and my first priority is to slow them down. One this occasion I used all magnetics on fast. It's a scenario that demands speed not stealth.

First off, I shot the stern tube at the tramp bearing 150 (he sank after about five minutes), then a bow shot at the medium cargo (slowed him to 1 knot) then starboard helm to line up on the small tanker. This one was a bit crafty and it took two torpedoes to finish him.

Then its a full speed dash on the surface after the last escaping tramp (one hit was enough). I find that this ship tends to explode violently so don't get too close or you'll lose your watch crew.

Then it was back to finish off the medium cargo (2 more needed) and the decoy. This time I attacked from his port bow and 'lead' the shot so that he walked into it when he opened the throttle.

Gosh, it was fun. I haven't played that tutorial for years. I was nice to charge about on the surface without having to worry about aircraft or destroyers for once.

Yes, it's always a good idea to save where possible on the surface although I find my game is much more stable now with GWX.

One weird glitch that I get when playing the torpedo academy with GWX3, if I check the mission orders after sinking all five ships (and I always wait to see them go down!) it tells me that my secondary objective (sink all the ships) is 'incomplete'. Nevertheless, when I return to base my score is recorded as 'Excellent' - just a minor glitch I guess . . .

Three torpedoes! You must be a Kaleun of private means to afford such expenditure on a tramp steamer. We poorer skippers can only look on in envy.

I begrudge having to use more than one on anything - battleships and carriers excepted, they can have two to start with. My 1WO was an auditor before joining the KM.

Torpedoes are expensive and we have to account for everything to the flotilla. My crew even have part-time jobs ashore when in port to pay for the fuel for the next patrol. No home leave for them.

There is a war on, you know!

psst! Any spares? We'll pay you back, honest...

I always shoot the stationary steamer first, just out of spite. I close to 500 meters and aim just behind the bow. He can't accelerate fast enough to avoid that. Be careful, though, he's a tricky one. If you misjudge and aim forward of the bow he'll know it, and he'll sit there and watch it go by.

Its all about striking a balance - in these unusual times, returning to base with torpedoes still on board and risking an accusation of cowardice in the face of the enemy (from some fanatic) can be more dangerous than surfacing among a squadron of enemy destroyers - at least with the destroyers there is a chance of a safe surrender . . .
