Welcome to subsim and to SHIV -- and then to SH5.
Mods are the thing. I'm playing SH4 in two modes, American S boat for the challenge and as a British captain using the complete mod makeover We Dive at Dawn. I'm also doing SH3. Luck in your hunting!
