I have had the same game install for over five years now and only use JSGME. The only reason I even had to do that was that I got another computer back then.

Could you give a reason why you think JSGME is stupid.
 You are obviously having some sort of problem. And your Subsim family is here to help.  JSGME is a doddle once it is installed.  It takes a copy of your files for safety.  If you forget to take a copy.
