Mysterious Fog??

I find fog a great opportunity. If I get a sonar bearing and head to them for the most part I will always see them visually before they pick me up so I have a field day with my deck gun and torpedoes firing on my visual bearings.

I will either avoid the escorts knowing they can not see me and do not hear me since I am surfaced or I pick them off first by sitting at periscope depth and allowing them to hear me. When they come towards me I will plot a quick coarse so I have my deck gun lined up on them and fire at them before they can ever see me.

I sink them first then go after the merchants.
