You will get the new tower sooner or later. The only way to continue your career is to copy parts of the saved game file (containing rank, medal, tonnage sunk, crew) before the upgrade to a dummy file that matches the state of the boat as close as possible (i.e. you get the new tower in June 1941, so you start a new career in June 1941, save the game and use this file as transplant host. Take a look at the crew screen when the tower upgrade has gone all wrong. Some slots are empty, some slots are missing. The crew is not sleeping, they have been blown into digital nirvana. Lurker assumed that the bug is caused by additional allied equipment accidentally built into the boat when the new tower is mounted (= parts of code for US equipment is loaded when it shouldn't).
