From what I read recharging could not take place in the tubes, you need to to get rid of the hydrogen and the tubes weren't configured for that.
In regards to pre-heating, it was done outside the tubes but I am not sure whether the tubes (or which models of them) were wired to keep the torpedoes batteries heated if they could not be discharged quickly. |
