In the real world you get a report from sonar, the captain tells everyone what he wants and they do it from the weapons officer to XO. The weapons officer makes sure everything is set and the captain decides when to fire ... that would be 5 to 10 miles away from the target using the MK48 Advanced Capability (ADCAP) Heavyweight Torpedo or the MK46 Mod 5. Occasionally a MK50. It is pretty much all governed by the ships computers from gathered senor data.
The fish can be set for active hunting meaning they have internal sonar that becomes active at a preset range from launch or they are passive by listening for cavitation which directs the fish towards the target. They are wire guided so if they lose the target and the submarine can target it on sonar the weapons specialist can manually turn the fish back towards the target. The fish strikes ... target go boom ... ship goes down. I fish ... one kill. If its a big ship ... well we always might have a nuclear tipped fish or two. They are working on anti-torpedo torpedoes. |
