My helmsen "vanish" in front of my eyes. As their captain I'd rather them just sit there .Beam me up Scotty.

They really arent helmsmen. They are at diving stations and are called planesmen. They are only suppose to man those stations when diving. So yes, it is historicaly correct to not have them there when surfaced.

I call them "helmsmen" because It's how they're referred to in the data/animations file. It may be historically correct but my choice is to not have them vanish ,it freaks me out somewhat. Just a personal thing.
