Default I'm Storming the Beaches

Over the summer I will be traveling Europe with a group of friends. One of the places we are going will be Normandy.
The research I have done into the area shows me that I cannot throw a stone without hitting a museum or memorial.
Is there a particular spot that rises above the rest or should not be missed for a history buff like myself.

Your very lucky...my father dropped Canadians onto the beaches at Courseulles-sur-Mer and I've yet to get the opportunity to go there.

Have a great trip

still have not done it myself, but its on my bucket list. My brother-in-law who is a history nut like me went a few years back and apparently, the beaches have not changed much since D-Day and you can still find abandoned german bunkers all over the place.

As to places to visit, take your pick: OMAHA, UTAH, JUNO, GOLD, SWORD. Ste-mère-église, Vierville, St-Laurent, etc. Canada opened a visitor center/museum at JUNO which is supposed to be quite nice.

My next big trip is Germany/Poland in 2014, never been, can't wait.

I've gone out there a couple times in '93 and '94.

For me, being an American, the stand out place was the American Cemetary above Omaha Beach. Very moving. The whole area has some old fortifications.
A short ride from there is Pointe du Hoc. Definitely worth a visit.

I used Bayeaux as my base in '94. There is a British cemetary there where I was moved to tears by reading the inscriptions carved into the headstones.

Enjoy your trip and tke lots of pictures and make sure you post 'em for all to see.
