dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/balao) says it's
buh-lou (emphasis on 1st syllable) but I had always heard bu-lahw It's from Spanish, so the ao is a diphthong (pronounced together.) Does the skin drop into SH4? It looks really sharp. |

Yes, it's from Spanish, just like Gato. The men who sailed on her, however, pronounced it as Sledgehammer427 described, just as the other boat's crew pronounced it "Gay-toh".

Wow! It must have been really cool to have talked with all the guys from the Balao and Gato personally!

The On Deck color series has one called USS Pampanito by Robert C. Stern and it is a full tour of the boat outside and inside with nothing left out. This is a great book.

Then what would be the correct Spanish pronunciation?

It would be "ba-la-o" (IPA: /ba.'la.o/).

Was Googling when I saw a link and it dawned on me: Balao isn't Spanish. It's Portugese, with a tilde over the a. (Means "balloon" although that fish doesn't look much like one.) Heard the Portugese pronunciation on-line, but couldn't reproduce it phonetically. Doesn't matter anyway. Everyone will call it what they want.
