I suggested something similar several years ago. Simple in theory, but how simple is it to execute in the game? Can it be done without rewriting the source code, which is illegal? That's the real problem.

is it not legal if you do it yourself but don't share it? i thought HSIE edited his source code but rather than sharing it he told you how to DIY so you become the legal owner of the software or something

If you do something for yourself it's technically still illegal, but who is going to know? That's why they have the warnings on DVDs. But no, I was refering to creating a mod to share, which from your description sounded like what you had in mind.
