Could it be that Italy as well as having very strong right to be demanding answers has an absolutely overwhelming right to say "what the bloody hell were you idiots doing"?
Conditional of course on if it is true as reported that a ransom payment had already been made and the criminals had said to the attacking troops outside the compound that they would hand over the hostages.

Well Jimbuna.....
It is rather convoluted.
Since Mcmanus was from manchester a local rag like the manchester guardian is a good starting point. As well as doing a take on the nigerian reporting they link to a piece in Corriere della sera for the Italian version of events which itself links back to the British daily telegraph plus carries info on the mauritanian sideline as the hostage deal was linked to several other ongoing ransom situations in that region of Africa.
What makes the events more complicated is that Britain has a stated public policy of never ever officialy dealing with any such situation . Which is of course bollox as they do every time, but they always do it in the roundabout way to pretend to be saving face which slows the whole process down to a sluggish back and forth at the pace of two altzheimer sufferers playing a game of guess who.
So when events happen fast like in this case they throw the whole bag out the window leaving their Italian partners wondering what the hell just happened..... and in this case they also buggered it up entirely.

But in the vein of some of the early posts in this topic to show them as what they are....can you remember your Prime minister demanding answers from the American government when a British hostage was killed in a botched rescue in Afghanistan?
Was there a rash of negative comments about how Cameron should stick it where the sun don't shine or how the US troops were some trigger happy cowboys?

Oh yes, I remember it well...I forget the womans name but I do remember the negative reaction by many here.

In situations like the above and the recent rescue attempt it's probably best to leave it to the people on the ground, those who hopefully have up to date intel.

Sadly as we already know, it doesn't always work out in the end.

Unfortunately Nigeria hasn't got a good record with its military so that colours the "people on the ground" angle plus its government has a big local PR problem with Britain so that doesn't bode well either.

One interesting side story out of this though.
Italy is having problems as some of its troops doing the "stop the hostage takers" operations on the other side of the continent ended up shooting a load of innocent Indians by mistake and the Indian government is not a happy bunny about it....yet the Indian navy doing the same operations ended up killing a load of innocent Indonesians(I think it was) and that government is pissed at he Indians just like the Indians are pissed at the Italians and for exactly the same reasons.

Complicated ain't it, so many governments and so many situations...yet they are all in essence the same, mistakes happen and governments demand answers because it involves their citizens

Leave it to the experts....the terrorists are always consistent in meeting their objective
