Also, my understanding is that the game doesn't remember you're in silent mode when it loads your save. I know when I load a save I can issue the command even though the icons show I'm already running silent. I try to avoid saving submerged at all, but when I can't avoid it I always stop the engines first.

Never save submerged or within detection range of another ship, leads to corrupt saves.

i must be lucky,i have heard about the problems people have had with corrupt save points,i upto now have never had a problem no matter where or when i save,i use a new slot every time, could that be the reason?

Probably not.

No ody has really figured out what corrupts the saves, just that there is a higher rate of success in the conditions I mentioned above.

thanks for the advice earlier guys,i have just got away from a convoy attack,i sunk a 10,000 tonner, went deep,or as deep as i could, its pretty shallow there off the east coast of england, manually set the speed to 1 knot and stayed on silent running.
the escorts were after me and bloody close at one point but i never had one depthcharge attack.
i got away from them and now running a paralell course on the surface to try to get back into position for another attack.
time is on my side atm as its just before midnight and i will hopefully be back in contact by 3am.gives me a few hours of darkness

Silent Running, 1 knot at 200m+ (or deepest you can go), 45 Degrees reverse track to your original attack course, and keep you back to the nearest escort (escort on bearing 180). Plenty of patience and don't be tempted to speed up, even when it looks like they've lost you... 4-6hrs should see you outa there. Have a peek in the scope first before you surface... you never know what you might find !!
