I am a cautios guy. I man battlestations, whenever I spot a destroyer not heading directly away from me. I was not there at the time, but I guess the real skippers did the same. And how would they explain to a court-martial that they did not man the battle stations, if something goes wrong?

I sometimes call general quarters for no reason at all...."ahhh, a practice drill, hahaha"

If I can't sleep, why should anyone else...giggle

"Now General quarters! General quarters! All hands man your battlestations! This is a drill! This is a drill!"

Heard it many times. Only heard "This is not a drill!" once.

You're not only welcome to hold practice drills, you're supposed to.

I used to have a lot of diving drills. I would have my stopwatch in hand recording how long it took to reach periscope depth, or 200'. This was not entirely frivolous, by the way, as I had an mod issue that made it impossible to execute a normal dive in less than 5 minutes.

I sound it anytime I'm heading into a combat situation, anytime I suspect I may be about to be in a combat situation, anytime I'm thinking about a combat situation, and anytime it would amuse me to do so.

Admittedly, in the last two cases, I usually secure from battle stations almost immediately. Not exaggerating on the 'may be about to...' I often send the crew the general quarters when crossing through the Sunda Strait, for example.

My signature is an actual quote from my significant other.
