At one point during the Reagan administration, it was decided to let the Soviets know just how good our submarine tracking abilities were. So our attack subs, all over the world, at the exact same time, pinged every Russian missile sub.

Over the course of the following weeks and months, as each sub returned to base and reported on their missions, the Russians slowly came to the realization that every one of their subs were being successfully tracked.

That notwithstanding, given the Iranian technical prowess, i.e., sonar of all things, OMG, jeepers creepers, we're all pretty much screwed now, eh?

I remember hearing about that years ago. I can only imagine Red Fleet's response when they put all the reports together.

In a lighter comical sense, I can see a corny message like this for the individual boats from the US:

*PING*

"Glorious Salutations, Comrade!
We were concerned about you and the safety of your crew and had to ping you to make sure everything was OK. Have a great day!

Signed, The Crazy American Sub in your Baffles."

Where does the wind-up key go in that little tank?
