Right idea; wrong section of the file. You are editing your own [PLAYER] medal requirements. You want to do that for [MEDALS_CREW]. Scroll down the SilentHunterIII/data/Cfg/basic.cfg file a bit further; it's right below where you are now. Here's mine, as altered

[MEDALS_CREW]
DecreaseFatigueMax=0.1
IncreaseMoraleMin=0.1
RenownStep=5; RENOWN, u-boat badge
SunkInPatrol=600000; TONNAGE, front clasp
RenownStep2ndClass=5000; TONNAGE, IC 2nd
SunkInPatrol1stClass=20000; TONNAGE, IC 1st
SunkInPatrolGerman=60000; TONNAGE, GC
SunkInPatrolKnights=100000; TONNAGE, KC

SH3 got medals all wrong (most of them).

u-boat badge: was given to all on board after 1st war patrol if they sank anything, otherwise after the 2nd war patrol. Note that SH3 bases this medal on RENOWN, not tons. I lowered it to 5 so that if I sink ANYTHING, everyone gets the badge.

front clasp: SH3's biggest error. This medal wasn't even available until late 1943. I put in an impossible number of tons so it doesn't get awarded. After 1943, I change it to a more realistic 60,000 tons so it can be awarded. Caveat: by 1943, it becomes increasingly difficult to sink a large number of tons. The Happy Times are over!

IC 2nd: These were given out wholesale. I use a low number of tons so everyone on board can easily obtain this.

IC 1st: Choose any realistic number of tons, but don't make it too easy.

GC: German Cross in Gold was hard to get and usually went to Warrent and Petty Officers in lieu of the Knight's Cross. A few commissioned officers also got it, but most KC winners did not. Unfortunately, SH3 mandates that before you can award a Knight's Cross, that person must first have the GC, so don't set the number of tons too high.

KC: Knight's Cross. Historically, 100,000 tons was required in all theaters except the Mediterranean, where 50,000 was the norm to allow for the added difficulties due to the unusually clear water. U boats could easily be seen from the air, even at periscope depth.
