Dispruptive behavior in class....is that for the school to deal with or should that be done at home? For that matter how can it be done at home? Illegal drugs on school premesis.....is that parents or schools who must enforce that? Weapons on school grounds......parents???????Are they supposed to search their own children at the school door every time their child walks through it? How about that great one about disruptive parents at school functions? Should the other parents join together and beat the crap out of the ignorant pricks at the ceremony or should it be the school that deals with it. |

It really is as bad as I say - and I went to a private school up until this year. The private school was more uptight, but the quality of the education was 100% better in everything but math. Oh, BTW, a study showed that the amount of money spent per meal on prison lunches is actually greater than the amount spent on public school lunches.

And yes, in some subjects, I do know more than my teachers. Is it supposed to be BAD that I do extensive research into some subjects? I'm an expert in the Pacific theater of WWII, all aspects of the major air forces of the 20'th century, and politics. I spend weeks and months and years researching and consulting with leading professors and authors simply because I enjoy those topics. Is that a problem to you? Quite frankly you haven't managed to prove any point with regards to my first hand allegations, only to piss me and several other people off. To be honest I think an admin should review all the unprovoked insults you've been issuing in this thread. Just because we don't share your elitist (in appearance), "the government knows best", point of view, doesn't make us wrong. That attitude is bigoted by definition. In fact, it appears that most people in this thread are against most of what has been talked about here. Now, back on topic. With regards to detention conflicting with child care arrangements, let that be the parent's problem. It isn't the school's fault that the kid did whatever they did to deserve a detention. If it messes up the arrangements, let the parents deal with the kid in their own way after they serve the time. It is the kid's fault. The kid has to serve the punishment for the crime eventually. Reschedule it or something - don't let them off the hook. I got suspended my 8th grade year for cussing out a rather large crowd in the hall because they were talking crap about my late brother. Did I get out of it because my parents had nobody to "take care" of me? No. My father drug me to the office every morning, which was not only humiliating, but boring as hell. I fully recognize that this response is emotionally charged because I will not be called unintelligent by somebody that doesn't even know me.

In the end, much of the punishment for some of these things should come down to the parents. The school gives em detention, or suspension for some things, and the parent grounds them or takes things away or gives them a good whacking. Not being slapped with misdemeanors, felonies (throwing an eraser is considered a DEADLY MISSILE, which is a felony? WHAT?) and often hefty fines. Brutal fights, vandalism, theft, ect. should be punished in such ways but come on now. The schools dont LET parents decide much anymore. But moving away to a different district (its often an entire district who enforce policies) can be costly and sometimes not even an option.

I don't know. My daughters high school has a uniformed policeman. There are camera installed in every hall. It is all for security.
When we go to the mall there is uniformed policemen. There are cameras installed in every walkway and store. It is all for security. I go to the airport. There are uniformed policemen. There are cameras installed everywhere. I get felt up by TSA. It is all for security. I go to a football game. There are uniformed policemen. There are cameras installed everywhere. I get felt up as I hand over my ticket. It is all for security. I go to the grocery store. There is a uniformed security/policeman at the door. There are cameras in every isle. It is for security. So our schools are like what?

Malls and stores have just rent-a-cops, right? Not sure what any of these guys are gonna do with a real emergency. Certainly nothing preemptive. It's like ridiculous post-Columbine metal detectors... they are useless unless the operator is prepared to preempt anyone who might pull a gun instead of getting scanned with lethal force.

"You" has been corrected to "one", in my original post. The statement is no longer aimed at you, but those to whom it fits. (I'll be more careful about wording.) |

No matter which way you cut it it comes down to the schools picking up the crap left to them from bad parents and also doing the bidding of good parents. They are in a no win situation and it is the parents(and children) not the schools who are the problem. Do you think that schools which have introduced these "unreasonable" disciplinary measures havn't tried already all the other approaches you suggest? |
