When you say you moved some distance away it's possible that it wasn't quite far enough. To get a relatively 'safe' save, the general rule of thumb is to be surfaced and about 50km clear of land and/or convoys.

The second career is a little more puzzling. If it's crashing there as well it sounds like you may have a mod related problem. I'd be inclined to test it without any mods to see if the game will fully load. If it does you can then add them one by one to pinpoint the source of the problem.

On the other hand, if it still won't load then you've got an issue with the game files themselves. In which case you're probably looking at a reinstall.
