If you want to see more of the world go with the IX.

I enjoy the IX U-Boats and never looked back.

I use only the IX types: IXB - IXC for long range attack patrols in the whole Atlantic and the IXD2 when I want to try the Far East theatre.

I don't see much point in 'purchasing' anything after the IXB until the IXD2 becomes available tbh

I prefer the type VIIB because it can dive faster (life-saving later in the war) and is more maneuverable that an type IX.

Stock SH3 does not reflect the important differences between the VIIb, C, and C/41 - especially diving depth. Besides, the B is marginally faster than the other two variants. That said, you can alter the stock u-boat cfg file(s) to change that to more historical accuracy.........or to build an uber-uboot for arcade play.

If you de-select "limited fuel", you can have the same range as a type IXD2 - just pretend like you are meeting Milch Cows at sea for fuel and food, except that they're fresh out of torpedo reloads when you do. You can sail to the Gulf of Mexico and back and your time on station is limited only by the number of eels and cannon shells aboard.

Historically, the IXs were considered by BdU to be too slow and sluggish for convoy attacks, and relatively easy prey for aircraft and escorts. To overcome this, they were relegated to long-range operations to areas where ASW defenses were weaker and/or most ships sailed solo. This took optimal advantage of their large fuel bunkerage and torpedo load-out.

say what you will....laugh at me....mock me.

But my favorite Uboat in sh3 is the type II
  • smaller, harder target to see/find/hit
  • fast diving
  • smaller crew, easier to manage
Sure, the lack of extra torpedoes is a pain, but that's nothing that a little crazy running and gunning with the flak gun can't handle (it's not like you are going to use it to shoot down aircraft anyway)......yes I'm serious.

But between the VII and the IX, the larger deck gun, extra torpedoes and flak guns, and greater range have me sold on the IX.

Going to have to go with Howard on this one. Especially with the release of U-Boot_HAHD not far off, Type II is the way to go

That'll be the main reason I will return to the type II soon. However they will also incorporate certain VII and IX types. Probably not from the first release but they will be playable later on

This reminds me of a question. Playing GWX with Commander, how do I go about transferring to the Pacific (or the Black Sea, for that matter)? I assume I load the "GWX-Merged Campaign" mod, but then what? What do I have to set in Commander, then what do I do in the game?

Does GWX?

Just enable(thru JSGME) GWX-Black Sea Campaign or GWX-Indian Ocean Campaign (for the Pacific) if you want only one of those theaters. The merged campaign will load everything (Indian Ocean, Black Sea, Atlantic) with probably a huge increase in loading times.
If you load one of those individual campaigns, only ships in those areas will load, so if you are still sailing in the Atlantic, you will definitely be lacking a target rich environment-there will be no ships whatsoever in the Atlantic.

To transfer with a current career, you just have to use the transfer selection in the captain's office in-game. I'm not sure what you have to do with Commander though, if anything.

I go to the Tye IX as fast as I can in the war. With luck, you will have an uncontested year to play havoc with that big deck gun! Early in the war, a Type IX can easily wipe out an entire convoy, especially if you take out the escorts.

Last time I made it to 1944, I had switched back to a Type VII in the hopes that maneuverability would save me.

I'd thought I was supposed to sail there first (when transferring from another flotilla). Well, it's a while off yet. I'll ask for a step-by-step when I get to that point.

In the type XXIII mod, the readme says it doesn't work with any other mods.

In SH3, probably none.

For real, it's an extra layer of protection around the pressure hull.
Kind of a shock absorber.

Type II & VII = single hull.
Type I & IX = double hull.
