What version of SHIV are you running? Is it the Gold Edition with the U-Boat Expansion Pack? Also, are you using any mods?

I don't know if this will work for stock or what your playing, but I can get the bearing of the closest contact by Ctrl + v. It works for planes too.

Sometimes I don't get the menu window either. I don't know if it's a bug or if it has something to do with specific conditions in the game. Were you TCing just prior to contact?
