Rather dumb for him to resign or to be pushed to resign.A shirtless photo? big deal.A naked photo? so what? Does not affect his ability to be a congressman. One thing I dislike about my country is a lot of people are way, way, too uptight about things like this.

Luckily all the news stories tell us his party in the first 1-2 sentences (if they did not, we'd still know what party it was (the style guide seems to be you mention party right away if it is "R" and much later (or not at all) if "D").

So you see nothing wrong with a married politician advertising himself on a dating site?

I demonstrates his dishonesty, which is of course part of the job description for a politician.
But raises so many questions about his judgement and integrity that his abilities to serve any public office at all are highly questionable.

It's not instantly disqualifying as a personal decision, but the party should boot him for being an idiot.

What is disqualifying, IMHO, is that it is a serious security risk, and puts him in a position to be blackmailed.

No, so he is unhappy in his marriage and looking for fufillment outside of it, big deal, not the right thing to do but it's common and no one's business but his, well the wife as well.Does not affect his ability to be a congressman unless he is caught being dishonest about things pertaining to his job.Dishonesty with the old ball and chain and dishonesty at work are two different things, sorry.

Yes it does. It creates a situation where he can be blackmailed. This would be enough to disqualify him for a clearance (getting a Q should be required to run for office, frankly, just to get on the ballot).

Gawker.com - which is the site that broke the initial story, IIRC - posted a short interview with the woman that received the shirtless photo. It was up there earlier today.

Her advice for Lee's wife was to "go get tested" because in her experience, cheaters usually don't get caught the first time they cheat (or try to). And in DC it's so common for politicians to be getting something on the side - either with paid "escorts" or elsewhere - that she finds it hard to believe he wasn't out there looking for it and probably getting it from somewhere before he ever contacted her. She said she wouldn't be surprised to see other women come forward, even if their motivation is sketchy and their stories are questionable and they don't have a lot to back them up with. So I think you're probably right and the resignation was a preemptive move to try and head off a much bigger scandal and get out of the public eye somewhat before it all hits the fan.
