You should already have a clean backup of SH3 anyway, right?

Oh, absolutely. I run my SH3 setup.exe and install it to an "Original" folder and then copy the game folder into other directories for playable and "test" installations.

I did get the "succesfully patched" message at the end of the process tho' so I guess it all went okay. I suppose I'll notice the difference when I start installing mods and playing.

I'm just wondering if there's any way to tell (by looking at the game files) whether or not it "took" - does it create a backup of the original sh3.exe file and store it somewhere?
I use LAA (Large Address Aware) to patch any .exe and get any info

YES....it will backup the original sh3.exe

At least this version does:

(e.g.: "4gb_patch file.exe"). It automatically creates a backup copy of the original executable.

I used Privateer's patch from the link in the first post, and according to him it doesn't.

You know how it goes, if you opt for the "off brand" merchandise you have to make do without a few features.

EDITBIN.EXE /LARGEADDRESSAWARE sh3.exe

P.S. the same (4 GB) thing for Win XP 32

Oh, I know - not really worried about a backup file anyway.

And now that I've had some time to play...

My God... it's full of RAM!

Just started a test career with the following all enabled:

GWX 3 Wilhemshafen,St Naz,Schluese and xtra ships V6
Extras for the Wilhelmshaven campaign v2.4c
TMT v2 + ThomsensShips V4.2
Add TMT ThomsonsShips fix
LifeBoats&Debris_v4 [Modified]
FM_NewInterior_V1.0 with GWX Int Orders
Wac Animated Sub Pens interior start for GWX
Aces' Combined SH3.SDL Files v2

It loaded faster than the setup I was playing before the 64-bit upgrade and 4gig patch!

Still have the same issue with the sound from FM New Interiors that I did before, though... sound inside the boat is just insane, at least when I'm standing in the control room or looking at the navmap. When I switch views from outside to inside I don't get engine noise, I just get a huge indistinct something that sounds more like a giant mortar round is about to drop right down the tower hatch.

I remember when I played this mod before I ended up leaving out the .sdl file completely because I got terrible stuttering in the interior sound at anything over 2 TC but nothing like this... will have to do some searching and tinkering to see if there's anything that can be done to fix it.

Thank you for that patch. What I don't understand: Do I need the /3GB switch for 64-Bit systems?

I don't think so, I think that switch is only needed to force 32-bit systems to allow 3GB RAM (of the max 4GB the OS recognizes) to be used by an application provided the application is able to utilize it.

Since a 64-bit system recognizes more system RAM to start with, and doesn't limit apps to 2 gigs of it, if an app's exe file is able to use more than that (which is where Privateer's patch comes in) there's no need to force Windows to allow it.

Anyhow, I've got Win7 64-bit with 6 gigs of system RAM and all I did was run Privateer's 4GB patch for SH3, I didn't do anything else, and I'm definitely seeing the results.

Mass confusion on my part...

I'm running XP 32 bit. It can only see 3G of my 4G of RAM to start with. (BIOS confirms 4G, Windows says 3G).

How can I get it to see the other 1G so it can "use" the 3G patch?

Or is the 3G patch really only for 64bit O/Ss running games designed for 32bit O?Ss?

Sigh!

When I had XP 32 bit I already had 6 GB of RAM physically installed, but in My Computer>Properties it showed only 3.25 GB.

I'm not sure what the dealio is with that. I remember reading somewhere about Windows "setting aside" a certain amount of RAM for specific purposes depending on (IIRC) what kind of hardware one had installed, so I always figured the other .75 gigs that it should have recognized was being recognized but devoted to something in particular and thus not available for anything else.

what is 2 to the 32 power? A number (in computer world) of 4GB. Windows itself uses ~1GB therefore the max a 32bit Windows OS application can use is 3GB (physical ram). Anything over 4GB physical ram in a 32 bit OS isn't used (can't be addressed).

a 32bit OS can only address 4GB of physical RAM.

In Windows XP 32bit you have to edit the boot.ini file too
