Over the last few patrols I have been wondering whether my career was broken or not as I am in Januery 1941 (started career in August 1939), 11 patrols completed and have only seen axis planes so far

I will have to see if they start to appear as the war progresses.

Consider yourself lucky; earlier in the war they are more of nuisance and not very accurate/easily avoided. Bout late 42 early 43 they finally figure out how to use all the gadgets and can sink you easily; while you dive they just circle overhead waiting for you to resurface so they can hit you when you're most vulnerable.

Whenever Swordfish planes come attacking it can almost be a back handed gift; there's usually a carrier somewhere nearby that is a sitting duck if you can find her.

Expect to see less and less as the war progresses, as the RAF takes air superiority. I started a career in 1944, from Bergen, and 4 out of 5 times, as I would pull out of the pens, a B17 raid would hit the port. So do expect to see more and more planes, just not friendly.

I seem to recall posts about CTD's like this.

I don't remember if it was a Mod enabled on top of GWX 3 that caused it,
or a Mod that fixed it.

Can you post your Mods enabled list and system specs?

Also, what SH3 are you running?
with StarForce,
with Reloaded's hack,
non-StarForce later release?

Privateer is correct, it is usually down to a third party mod which is scripting a vessel into your library that already exists.

IIRC, a CTD can happen if an AI sub hits a Barricade ship. It might be because of this (I think there are AI subs and Barricade ships in this area).

how strange, until yesterday I had done 9 patrols and only seen 1 plane - an Anson on my first patrol just off the west costs of Ireland.

I was beginning to wonder why I hadnt seen any and was reading this thread with interest.

I set out on my 10th patrol last night , it is May 1940 . Im tasked with heading to a grid just west of casablanca.

I decide to hug the coastline of holland and head towards the channel (risky , I know but i usally get thru ok).

I am spotted in calm waters by a dutch armed trawler with eagle eyesight. (I forgot at this stage than holland were allied) , I dive and evade him and continue west.

I then get a sighting of a small convoy , so I up scope and see a fiji and V&w destroyer escorting a convoy - heading right across my path , I decide to be agressive and fire two torps at each.

The fiji takes a hit towards the rear and sinks very quickly (much to the delight of the crew) , the V&W takes one hit but stays afloat and begins to open fire on my position.

I go to free camera and am aware of a sort of buzzing noise...hmm , thats strange , whats causing that , I even look arond the room to see if somethign else if causing it .

suddnely it gets much louder , the box appears to the left showing two aircraft screaming down towards my position...its the RAF! , they drop a total of four bombs which damage me badly - the destroyer finishes me off..

But I was delighted to see some aircraft at last!

The first enemy I ran into after reinstalling SHIII was a lone RAF Hudson south of Iceland. I was so surprised that I didn't order a dive right away, and he flew by without dropping anything. I got my act together and dived, and as I passed 30 meters the bugger came back and bombed me. They all fell very wide of the mark though, it made me wonder how someone with eyesight that bad got to be a pilot. Since then I've seen an ME109 patrolling the French coast, and a couple of Hurricanes patrolling the Scottish coast, but that's it.

Early war (39- early 41). do the aircraft run at night? In particular, swordfish? Just got buzzed by some at dusk, and I'm running their back course at speed, trying to find the carrier. Also, what is their range (In game) from a carrier.

Jim, took yoru suggestion and opened the editor... apparently I just missed the Ark Royal crossing my path, unescorted it seems, by a couple days, but right now she's back in harbor.

I can vouch for Jim that it is true, have had that exact experience before. Started with 1 Swordfish attacking, then another single one comes; since Swordfish are easy to shoot down (even with the computer gunner) I decided to chalk up some planes to my tally and let the flak gunner have some fun. More Swordfish kept coming and coming, next in pairs and finally 3 at a time (this guy is a legendary flak shooter, when I finally promoted him to an officer he had 27 kills, only crewman on my boat with a RK because of that feat). With so many Swordfish around the only logical conclusion is that there's a carrier within striking distance.

Since I was on the surface the whole time and looking around I did spot the carrier about 12,000m from my position later on in the firefight. As the flot top ran out of planes I was able to get into a good firing position quickly and slam an eel under the plane elevator. Watching a BB sink is cool, watching a flat top sink is devilishly gratifying; especially when this one capsized before it finally went down.

I've never seen them in pitch black conditions, but they often show up at late evening / early morning, when the sun is below horizon but there's still some light around.
