In the early days I reckon most of us have reloaded an earlier save to see if we could have tackled our demise better.

I don't get to plat that often these days but it is always DiD.

I'll tend to stay dead and start my next kaluen's career from around that date, sometimes I think *sod it* and start back in '39. I'll only reload a save if I'm in the middle of trying a new mod but that career never counts towards much anyway.

I'll play DiD unless the death is the result of something other than regular gameplay. For example if I install a mod that causes my hull to collapse 10 seconds after loading up the career, I'll uninstall the mod and start from the second last save. If I'm killed in battle I'll start a new career back in '39 usually.

As a result, I've never made it to the end of the war yet. Farthest I've gotten is about early '43 since I tend to be a little too reckless for my crews liking (and well being). I like the thought posted above of starting a new career from the date the other was destroyed...it might allow me to see the end of the war so I think I'll give it a shot next time.

Started a new career via SH3 Commander. Seriously, why didn't I install this before?

Kaluen Ohne einen Namen, commander of U-127, a IXB.

It's December 1939. Time to give Jenkins hell.

I've been playing since the heyday of Silent Service, and I don't recall ever having an option to reload an earlier save, which means I've always played DiD. On the other hand I have a career going out of each available command as I slowly work my way through the war, so I can't exactly boast about 'realism' in that department.

I'm also in the "Dead is Dead" crowd. Knowing that my career is on the line makes me more cautious and realistic - no going in with guns blazing. It also makes you sweat a little after 15-20 missions when the Tommy's are raining down ash cans.

The only time I would use an earlier save is if the game or PC screwed up (e.g. got stuck on time compression and ran aground).

It makes me sweat after 0 missions - I don't want to die!

How would TC into land be a game or PC fault?

Seriously, we don't know, we do recommend it, and now you've started using it you should also get (if you haven't already) Ships Names to add to it!
