Like it was said already it is normal to dump your trash at sea. I don't know how the Russians do it but if the picture is any indication it's no wonder we could track them anywhere. On my boat we didn't have room for 90 days worth of trash. So it got loaded into a steel can, weighted down, and shot out the bottom of the boat to sink to the bottom of the ocean. However if we knew we were going to be pulling into a port in the next few days we would hold the trash and offload it when we pulled in.

Was this a special tube only used for trash or was it also used for something else?

Trash only. It was a vertical tube that came out the bottom of the boat.

This is interesting.

These types of logistics fascinate me.

Don't they compress the trash down into a flat disk?

Trash is separated into two categories, wet and dry. Dry trash gets compacted with a trash compactor. Wet trash does not get compacted as the end result is extremely messy. Wet trash is using plate scrapings from the last meal and doesn't do to well under 3000lbs hydraulics.

Can't stop thinking that it would much more disturbing if the trash wasn't from the sub!

Thanks for the info. guys, very interresting.
Some of it were bread thrown overboard by the sailors to lure the polar bear closer, but not all was just bread apparently.
