Does the Sound Operator get better with experience? I've noticed that I can manually detect ships from about twice as far away as the soundop can.

The tip about stopping and checking the hydrophones until you can get a visual is a good one. I usually draw a 20km circle around my position when i first detect a ship, so I have an idea how far I can sail before I consider a target "lost". Just remember in bad weather (especially with RuB) you may not get a visual until it's right on top of you!
