I'd even accept the idea that as soon as you surfaced, you asked for the escort assuming you weren't going to make it. So as soon as you reached a point where rescue could reach you, It'd be ok to click RTB.

Well, I figure since I was so close to the coast, near Brest, some German craft would end up spotting us.

Or we could just send a couple of runners to contact Brest on foot and return with escorts.

Within 5 km from the coast very near Brest, I doubt a lot the uboat would be lost or in danger.
