If it is lit up it is neutral, not matter what the flag says.

Sinking a neutral is usually considered a bad thing. Part of the problem in the game is that if a neutral ship was in a convoy in real life it became fair game, and the game doesn't allow for that.

What I have done is to edit my renown so I get no punishment but also no bonus for sinking a neutral, and less punishment for sinking a friendly, since in real life it ocassionally happened, and not one kaleun was stripped of rank or command for doing it (as far as I know).

Here's how: Open your Ubisoft/Silent Hunter III folder and open Data/Cfg/Basic. Near the top you will see [RENOWN]. Part of the list says

NEUTRAL=-1
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-10

Change it to

NEUTRAL=0
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-1

to get a more realistic result.
