In that case you shouldn't feel like such a dumbkopf. What time of the war are you patrolling? From late 41 onward I consider all surface targets to be armed and do not risk surfacing until I can visually confirm that the target has no guns.

1943 But I know my boat can handle a few armed merchants or a cocky warship. I sunk the Revenge surfaced with only my deck gun, now I'm looking for some other Battleships, they're not as all powerful as they're cracked up to be. Once you get the big guns off you're good, all they are now is a very fast armed merchant. (Except the fleet carriers, attacking them surfaced is suicide even I have limits

![]() What level are you playing on, and with what mods? A submarine's gun is useless against the 5" guns of a destroyer, let alone 8 15" guns on a battleship. In real life that 3.46" popgun would bounce of the turret armor of a battleship and barely scratch the paint.
