AFAIK Area 51's existence was/is denied (Or at least not publicly acknowledged). It's an open secret, much like the stealth fighter before it was officially unveiled, nothing too unusual.

There might still be "top secret" stuff there, like there has been during the Cold War, who knows.

Right, so something like research on a theoretic level is still going on there, but nothing that involves testing. The place is watched by alien nuts all the time, not much one can test unless it's small enough that you can do it indoors.
