I've always had to go to the station and choose the HE ammo to get the gun loaded before any shells could be fired.
If I've already ordered the crew to fire at will, they will begin doing so as soon as I go back to the bridge or binocs or wherever. Or I can stay and start firing myself. But if I've ordered the gun manned and told them to fire at will, nothing happens until I go to the gun myself and select the HE ammo. I usually just go to the gun and select the HE shells at the beginning of a patrol, and then everything's good to go once I find something to shoot at. I experimented once with adding a little AP ammo to the default GWX loadout, but never really stuck with it long enough to see if it would then auto-load when the gun was manned. I think that was when I started having CTD issues and had to sort that out, and I've never gone back and tried to workaround the issue again. |
