IIRC, "ma'am" is considered to be the respectful way for a servicemember to refer to a woman. At least according to my dad (retired commander), maybe someone here can correct me if I'm remembering wrong...

The whole thing is kind of silly actually but it points out the aloofness of the "higher beings" that is (allegedly) the US goverment. Far removed from reality and everyday life.

Yes 'mam' was a respectfull address but evidently not respectfull enough for Ms. Boxer.
