A confused, chaotic, disrupted match. Congratulations to the referee for scoring a decisive victory. With refs like him you do not need to play ball anymore.

The German coach Joachim Löw said it best after the match (which he left in fury after the final whistle). Being asked about the impressive flood of yellow cards, he laconically said (and I quote him by memory): Before one answers that question, one has to realise that it was a relatively fair match, there were no serious or really brutal fouls at all. Why in such a fair match such a huge number of yellow cards can pile up, needs an explanation.

Worst ref performance i have seen at this tournament so far, most of the cards for both teams were no cards at all. I think the Germans would have deserved the win, they had more chances and did more for the match despite being outnumbered. The goal hit them in the minute after the red card, when they still were disoriented and needed to regroup from the loss of Klose.

FIFA has given out rules that tell refs to call out things and events that are no issues at all, the standrds have been tightened to a degree where since quite some time they start to hurt the game. But this ref interpreted it to the extremes and beyond, even for the already messed up standards of FIFA.
