Is that historically accurate that all hatches were shut on battle stations in German subs?

It would take a lot of digging to find out for sure, but it would seem logical that they would close them when in battle stations. Communication could still be done thanks to the speaking tubes, and the ducting would still allow ventilation. If a leak started, it would be contained in that compartment already.
