Commander Wreford-Brown was captain of the HMS Conqueror when it sank the cruiser ARA General Belgrano during the Falklands War of 1982. He is the only nuclear-powered submarine captain to ever sink a ship.

I was surprised that none of the other Brits on SS had taken the name and always use it when starting a new career.

I just hit the Random Name button and keep hitting it until I see a name that strikes my fancy at the moment.

But if I'm creating a "test" career just to try out mods or a new install, lately I've been typing in Rufus T. Firefly.

I wonder, has anyone ever had the random name generator generate the full name of one of the more famous real life uboat commanders?

So far I've only had that happen with the crew names - got Otto Kretschmer as a bootsmann once.

Closest I've had is a Kyle Dönitz as a matrosengefreiter. When starting new careers I just use the random names in commander, though recently I decided to bring Rudolf Strasser out of retirement in 1944

My own full name, always. Doesn't feel right otherwise, even though I'm definitely not German. Samuel is ok though I can't find a translation/alternate German version of my last name which is Irish in origin.

Glad to have you aboard, JohnWoo.

I let SH3Commander generate the names for me these days.

I've almost always used the randomised names from SH3Cmdr. I have toyed with using Zähler von Nieten recently though.

Off topic but... Speaking of the General Belgrano, did you know she used to be the USS Phoenix and was one of the few ships to survive the attack on pearl harbor.

Quite correct and also has the distinction of being the largest Argentinian warship sunk during the Falklands conflict

I originally toyed with the idea of using the name 'Wanklyn' after who is IMHO the most famous British sub captain of them all....Malcolm David Wanklyn VC, DSO and Two Bars.

I just couldn't for some reason or other that escapes me right now

These days I simply let Commander randomise a name for me.
