In no particular order:

Natural Born Killers
A Clockwork Orange (pretty much everything from Kubrick except Lolita)
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky Laputa
(well, pretty much anything from Studio Ghibli except Grave of the Fireflies, which is just plain depressing)
The Ghost in the Shell (and its sequels)
(well, pretty much anything from Shirow)
Pretty much all the movies which have Philip K. Dick as source material

There are a number of directors I really like: Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Tim Burton, Hayao Miyazaki, et al.

And the movie I have most recently seen which I thought was awesome had this badass in it:

Never have I seen an 11 year old girl character so brutally kill so many men (and one woman), while continuously saying all sorts of naughty words.

Anything 30's mafia related is close to my heart. Finnish crime movies are pretty good too (always have a sad ending). Despite seeing 9. company/9.rota a zillion times already, I keep going back to it, very good movie about the Russia's war in Afghanistan in the 80's.

I must admit, i am not a fan of Russell Crowe, but the movie was grand, the opening was just awesome, one of the best opening scenes in a movie imho.

I would say Russell Crowe made that movie great for me. His acting was fantastic. This movie made me recognize his talent. I agree 100% with you on the opening scenes! Fantastic! The movie just covered it all...lies, deceit, murder, love, love lost, hero and villian.

First time I saw Crowe was when I rented LA Confidential - had no clue who he was but midway through the first scene I was already fast forwarding to the credits to find out what his name was because I was just blown away.

Gladiator did nothing but exceed my expectations, in fact I remember sitting there in the theater and as soon as the music got going (one of my favorite soundtracks) and the opening scene began to play out, I was thinking - oh... this is gonna be GOOOOOOD.

I have seen some films he was in that were not topnotch overall IMO but I have never been disappointed by his performances. He just about broke my heart in The Insider and I'm still unhappy he didn't get the Oscar for that, not to mention A Beautiful Mind.

Arguably my most favorite soundtrack! Beautiful Mind was excellent as well.

@ UnderseaLcpl: I wasn't too keen on the story of Saving Private Ryan, but the action in it was several notches above 'great.' The opening scene is in my top 5 favorite scenes, just because of how up front and gripping it is. That one scene, for me, really drove home just how horrible war can be.

First time I saw "Our Russ" was in Romper Stomper. If you've not seen it then I recommend you get it if you want to see his earlier work and glimpses of the brilliant acting to come.
