And yeah, no auto-updates and I installed everything in the correct order. Three more times. Didn't try to validate after install. You would think that I shouldn't have to with my 1.4mb/s cable line.

Not sure if registry keys are the problem, but there is a free program called ccleaner that will seek out and fix these type of registry issues (junk left behind.) It's also good for cleaning up all temporary files, cookies, and recycle bin in one fell swoop.
