One other thing is that SH5 resets the AOB when you take a "speed" reading. This can cause huge problems at short range.
The best advice would be to get TheDarkWraith's TDC interface which shows the TDC dials. You'll be able to see what's going wrong as you can clearly see the gyro angle. As a rule, for a target with 0 speed, if you point the periscope at 180, the number 5 tube should show a gyro of 0 (or 360). Then again some torpedoes did have faulty gyros or got their rudders stuck and thus became "circle runners".
Is this modelled correctly in SH5? Can you sink yourself with your own torpedo?

No idea. I usually shoot with a 000 gyroangle so... Anyway, the dud rate in SH5 seems very low anyway. I think I only had one dud in 2 years of war.
