TimeTraveller's crush depth tool was originally created to help players modify the original game's crush depth values, which were wrong in many cases. The developers addressed the crush depth issue in a patch and the depths were made more realistic. Before the patch came out I did some research on realistic crush depths and tried to figure out a realistic figure from the various sources (many of which disagreed with one another) that were available. The end results I got were almost exactly what the developers arrived at in their patch. The figures we arrived at independently may be conservative, but there are some seriously wacky numbers floating around, such as the 400m or even 450m crush depth that some sites list for the Type VIIC/42 (a boat which was never even constructed, so any crush depth listed for it is - in my view at least - pure fantasy).
