Try restarting your campaign. What you should hear the guy reporting, the ping and see the report `depth under keel is XXX meters`on your message screen.

They had charts back then you know. Why doesn't the map show it or press a key and it shows depth at the cursor or a number tucked away on the screen that shows deph at cursor location.

I dunno, I always figured that since the necessary equipment was actually on WWII uboats, that's how they did it then, with the Echolot, so it's something that's reflected in the game. I don't know that they even had accurate and complete depth charts for all the bodies of water they operated in.

In real life I would expect the sounding to also be used as navigation tool which can be checked against the charts in order to help determine position. Just like an altimeter is helpfull when navigating on land in hilly areas. They didn't have any INS nor GPS back then
