I don't quite know myself why this thread exists. Originally I thought it was a 'did anyone have this problem' thread, but it seems not. Just to clarify, I don't believe Neal would collude with a software company as alleged. He's always come accross as a man of high standards and low cut tops, who remains calm in the face of controversy.

I'm still trying to decide what is more stupid, the google group nonesense or us dedicating even a few seconds of our life to comment it

The latter. Or more to the point, someone even bothering to post it here.

Yes. Let's keep the censoring of what other people post alive and well.

Speaking of which, I got in a brief pissy back and forth with some other poster and a few posts disappeared into the ether. It was cool because all that stuff was better off not being posted in the first place and it could have distracted from the main thread. Still, it's kind of unsettling when posts vanish without any sort of trace. Thanks to the moderator for the service but a quick PM also would have eased my paranoid tendencies, just something like "I removed some posts to keep things positive" would've been ample.

i dont know the specifics of your situation but what you describe sounds like it was a banned member who returned with a false alias and started the thread.

if a persons account is deleted then it is automatic that all the threads he started get deleted as well and anyone who posted in that thread wont see any record their post exist anymore. it clears out all their content for certain rather then us having to try to continue to deal with and try to find all the leftover controversial crap they leave behind.

as a rule we only delete stuff as a last resort and only for good reason, even if it might be a reason that you dont have all the facts to understand.

Sounds like a fair and great system, especially because it eliminates all the damage control required to deal with the residuals, and assuming this procedure applys to banned members only. There are valid reasons presented by other posters here that when dealing with current members, I believe some notification should be in place.

This post was not on "Google Groups." It's a USENET news group. No censoring there, so if you have a problem, why don't you go over there and give them an earful? Nothing like a good old-fashioned USENET flamewar.

As a matter of fact, that post was correct. For a time you had to be logged in to read this forum. In the real world, if you have to register just to read, it appears as though it's a fanboi forum, or it's strictly controlled by the publisher, and therefore it's all pink ponies and rainbows. This is typically done when a publisher wants to limit exposure of hapless passers-by to grim truth.

Additionally, it was noted there later that you could now read without registering.

It all amounts to a Big Fat Hairy Deal.

Well if thats the case the person that posted did not register or read the 900 bazillion threads on why DRM is the Devil, or how the developers killed smurfs in front of the Care bears.

Thinking back...the fact that you had to log in order to read may have saved some business.
