Absolutely, if there's something I can help with or contribute I'll gladly do it. It's not the most complicated modification after all.

I think the read-me states as much, but any of this is free to use for anyone.

Which reminds me, I need to see about compatibility with newer versions of supported mods. No complaints or requests, so I figured it was all good.

*I'll dig around to see if the Japanese had something similar (my guess is they did), though you probably know better where to look.

These procedures were evidently conducted at the Nippon Kogaku's optical factory at Yokosuka, in coordination with the navy's submarine base at Nagaura Harbour. During their analysis of the plant, the U.S. Navy investigators noted: 'Evidence was found that lens coatings had been carried on' and recorded that 'a few samples of apparently experimental coatings and coating material were obtained. Such experimental work demonstrated the kinds of subsidiary technologies generated by the company's efforts to deliver on IJN optical contracts. As engineers sought new ways to solve these kinds of design problems, a host of secondary investigations was inevitably added to their ongoing studies in the field of glass production. These new tasks included: experimental methods of glass annealing, the four-stage grinding and polishing of both lenses and prisms, and a variety of efforts to enhance night viewing with the aid of lens coatings and filters. The company's efforts in the field of experimental periscope lens coatings would be of particular importance in the postwar period as such coatings were later found to have a variety of optical applications. Periscope production too continued after the war, and Nikon manufactured instruments for construction surveying, as well as a series of 10 metre periscopes for use in the railcar maintenance bays of the shinkansen, or bullet-train railway line.

It just lifts a tip of the veil, but it's something.

It seems that at least early research were just attempts at copying German optics. Considering Japan was part of the Axis forces during WWII, it might not be such a stretch to assume they simply adopted the German rayfilter assembly and used it in their own designs.

Of course, it's just a guess. Not even really an educated one at that.

I'm having fun digging stuff up. Always a lot of interesting stuff lurking beneath the surface.

anyways : so we should go for the orange filter then ?

we'd need the uboot addon 1.5 version as our mod replaces the german boats.

The orange is an option, but not confirmed accurate. Think I might shoot some mails around the web for confirmation.

At any rate: what I do is modify the "menu_1024_768.ini", so the 2 scopes use a different .dds. What I'd need is a copy of the .ini, and the .dds that needs some colour. Then I'll knock up a few versions with different opacity and you can pick which you want to use.

Or if you prefer to have color in both, you could just use the same file for both scope, or if you're using 2 different ones supply both files to be modded.



I don't know if this was the case with the Japanese ones, but for the US the observation scope had better light transmission, so I could add a highly transparant layer of black as well to make the picture less bright for the attack scope (imho this should be done with any scope since there's always a loss of light, but with the eye on playability it can be left out).

Come to think of it, I don't even know if the IJN used multiple scopes in their designs.

Obviously you can make the modifications yourself if you prefer. Like I said, I claim no "rights" to the concept.

I noticed I had two sets of dds : one in data/menu/skins/german/gui/layout/Periscope_Mask_1024

one in :

data/menu/gui/layout/Periscope_Mask_1024v10
data/menu/gui/layout/Periscope_Mask_1024

is the latter needed ? as we use german stuff, maybe that changes the US side ?

I made the Type 88 IJN periscope a year ago so the details are a bit blurry..

When you get in the "Skins" folder, there should be 2 folders. One for US and one for German. Follow either down further to get to the modded file.

Note how the stucture splits at the "skins" directory and continues on through both the "American" and "German" directories.

As long as both files go into the "German\Gui\Layout" folder, the US side should remain unafected.

I must admit it's all a bit blurry for me too. :rotfl:

I'll need a bit of time to get my bearings, make sure I do it right, but by the end of the day or tomorrow it should be usuable.
