There is a red tick on the depth gauge which indicates periscope depth. Order a depth slightly higher than that tick and the scope will spend less time obscured.

Thanks again! One more quick question - My game did not come with the manual. Is it on the disk? If not where can I get it from?

Manual...

Really the manual is worthless, you'll find better info here using the search function or just asking.

Go to someones house that owns SH4 and look in the trashcan.

It should be on your disk, and you can read through it, just be aware that not everything is the way the manual says. But you may get some info that is helpful.

Just wait and buy SH5. It will probably have the same manual.

FYI, the observation scope does not extend as far out of the water as the attack periscope.

Ohhhhh.. my... the truth hurts

If you got the game through steam you can access the manual through steam. Though as said before its not really worth the effort.

Problem is they put those big manuals in games today, cost will y high. Those days of 200 page manuals went away with 3.5 disc.

Notice today what we use to call manuals are sold as "Tip Books" in some fashion and usually cost $20.

its found in the main sh4 folder inside your support folder

one point that wasnt said is that they reused the exact same manual from sh3 and they just change a few (very few) words here and there so most of whats in it is incorrect or irrelevent to sh4. heck, a lot of it was incorrect for sh3 as well lol.

it looked like they didnt even put any effort into doing a manial for sh4 like it was something done on their lunch break because someone forgot all about it. (which is what i think happened)
